B.C. HEART RECIPIENT ALIVE, KICKING AND RUNNING 20 YEARS POST TRANSPLANT
On December 2, 2008, Minister Abbott joined with patients, doctors and health care system representatives to mark the 20th anniversary of the heart transplant program in British Columbia. Through continued innovation, and collaboration, over 325 life-saving heart transplants have been performed in British Columbia since 1988.

JANUARY IS ALZHEIMER AWARENESS MONTH
VICTORIA – From time to time, people forget: a number, a name, a notion. As time passes, people with Alzheimer’s disease forget more and more: where they are, what they do, who they are. To remember the 64,000 British Columbians affected by this devastating disease and the efforts being made to improve their quality of life, the Province of British Columbia is joining with the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to proclaim January as Alzheimer Awareness Month.

MOST ROUTINE PRESCRIPTIONS NOW EASIER TO RENEW
VICTORIA – Starting Jan. 1, 2009, patients who run out of routine medications may ask their pharmacist to renew their prescription without always needing a doctor’s appointment first, said Health Services Minister George Abbott.

THREE TEAMS SHORTLISTED FOR NEW CANCER CENTRE
VICTORIA – Three qualified proponent teams have been shortlisted to participate in the request for proposals (RFP) phase of the competition to design, build, finance and maintain the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North in Prince George.

PROVINCE AND PHARMACISTS SIGN DRUG AGREEMENT
VICTORIA – Savings of up to $29 million are anticipated in the first year of changes to PharmaCare prices for new generic drugs and the introduction of a pharmacy frequent-dispensing policy. The savings will be reinvested in other pharmaceutical initiatives to benefit patients.

$5.75M CAMPUS OF CARE OPENS FOR SURREY SENIORS
SURREY – Rosemary Heights Seniors Village officially opened today to provide a new campus of care with 90 residential care beds and 61 assisted living units, announced Health Services Minister George Abbott.
